Nexus G1 Modular Box Form-Factor Cinema Camera – Development Update

Nexus G1 Modular Box Form-Factor Cinema Camera - Development Update

If you thought the guys at Nexus were sitting on their laurels, think twice. Thomas and his brother Timothy, next to their dedicated team, are continuing to develop the Nexus G1, a camera that is being designed “by filmmakers for filmmakers”, promising to shake up our little industry, at least by the amount of attention it gets. We last reported about this project at the end of 2024, and now it is time for a quick update.

If you haven’t been following the Nexus G1 camera project, we are encouraging you to do so, even if just for the sake of seeing how a small, visionary team led by two brothers is trying to bring to life their modular box form-factor cinema camera, based on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6k. If you have been in the business of designing or manufacturing equipment, you will appreciate the effort. At the same time, for potential customers like us, it’s an intriguing project to follow—and possibly even support if it aligns with our interests.

As a side note: Looking at the Nexus G1 website, the project is described as being totally independent, without any involvement from Blackmagic Design themselves, yet with their full approval and support. As the camera uses the Blackmagic Design imaging system (aka, camera sensor and even BM BRAW), I’m truly curious to know what magic words those guys used to get this kind of amazing support!

Nexus G1 update

OK, I know you are here for the update, so here we go. For complete accuracy, I’ve copy/pasted the information from the company’s Facebook page.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 #𝟴

Hey everyone! Here is an interim update on the project. We are excited to announce that our team now includes three skilled software and electronics engineers, and we have partnered with a large electronics design & manufacturing company to build our electronics.

Development of the Nexus operating system (NexusOS) and electronics hardware is progressing extremely well.

We are also excited to announce that the Nexus G1 has four new features:

𝟭. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: The Nexus G1 will now have a video monitor feed that can be displayed on the rear 4” control panel screen (previously only displayed control menu). This means you can now frame shots and set exposure accurately without the 5” monitor or another external monitor connected. (Useful for setting exposure/focus on a drone setup or monitoring on a super small handheld setup).

𝟮. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲: The Nexus G1 will have accurate evaluative exposure measurement, which will allow auto exposure using the E-ND module or aperture (previously this was a potential feature, but it has now been confirmed).

𝟯. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻: The control panel of the Nexus G1 is now a high brightness 1,000 nit touchscreen custom designed for high visibility outdoors.

𝟰. 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗽𝘂𝘁 & 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗽𝘂𝘁: The Nexus G1 will now support Timecode Input & Output directly via USB-C without jamming to an audio channel. Two new USB-C ports have been added to the top of the camera for Timecode and other purposes.

Next update we will show the latest Nexus G1 prototype, powered and running NexusOS.

As for development timeline, we still plan to have units available starting Q2 this year.

We are now launching the Nexus Discord Server – we invite everyone following the project to join the server, ask questions, suggest software features, or just discuss filmmaking in general! https://discord.gg/reEkSEepTy

Final thoughts

It seems as if this project is moving forward nicely! The thing is that Blackmagic Design themselves are not standing still. Traditionally, just before NAB the company usually announces new equipment. If they do so this year, let’s hope it doesn’t overlap with what the guys at Nexus are working on.

What do you think about the Nexus G1 camera project? Will you be purchasing such a camera from a relatively unknown maker? Please share your thoughts with us in the comment section below.
